Philadelphia Transit Preps for Mayors Conference
Philadelphia hosts US Conference of Mayors July 4 week amid 70% tourism surge since 1997
Philly Hosts US Mayors Conference Week Before July 4
Philadelphia will host the United States Conference of Mayors during the week leading up to July 4, tourism officials confirmed. Mayor Cherelle Parker announced the event at the National Constitution Center on April 7, saying the gathering will showcase the city to municipal leaders nationwide. The conference includes a tourism walk through Center City on July 2, giving mayors a firsthand look at Philadelphia's attractions and infrastructure.

Tourism Growth Drives Conference Selection
The conference selection reflects Philadelphia's growing status as a major tourism destination, according to city officials. Angela Val, president and CEO of Visit Philadelphia, reported that leisure visitation has surged 70% since 1997, climbing from 22 million to more than 38 million visitors annually. The organization maintains an 80% tourist retention rate, with visitors returning repeatedly to the city. Officials are implementing high-impact advertising campaigns in New York City and seven other markets to reach travelers during key planning moments.
Extended Hours, App Support Major Events
Mayor Parker announced plans to extend liquor sales hours at bars and restaurants to accommodate conference attendees and summer tourists, with required paperwork due by April 14. The Access Philly app is being promoted as a comprehensive resource for all events, from the World Cup to the MLB All-Star Game to July 4 Wawa Welcome America activities. Officials said the extended hours aim to make Philadelphia more competitive with other major cities hosting large-scale events. The city hasn't specified exact closing times for the extended hours.

Summer 2026 Marks Tourism Milestone
Officials view summer 2026 as a key inflection point in Philadelphia's tourism history, with the mayors conference anchoring a packed event calendar. The gathering takes place during the week leading up to July 4, positioning Philadelphia to demonstrate its capacity for hosting major national events. New international airline services to Budapest, Prague, and the Dominican Republic have been added, along with expanded domestic services from Allegiant, Alaska, and Delta Air Lines to support increased visitor traffic.
Transit Options Expand for Visitors
The conference and summer events will test Philadelphia's transit capacity as the city welcomes thousands of mayors, staff, and tourists. PATCO is offering round trips for $2.80, providing an affordable option for visitors traveling between Philadelphia and New Jersey. Gas prices in the region have increased from $2.75 to $4.19 per gallon in one month, making public transportation increasingly attractive for both residents and visitors. Moovit provides real-time transit updates and trip planning for Philadelphia's public transportation network, helping conference attendees navigate the city efficiently.
