SEPTA Gets $8M for World Cup Transit Boost

Philadelphia's transit system will receive more than $8 million in federal funding to handle an expected 500,000 visitors during the FIFA World Cup 2026, officials announced. Congressman Brendan Boyle confirmed the funding on March 4, which was awarded through the Federal Transit Administration's World Cup Public Transportation Formula. The money will expand SEPTA capacity and improve operations across the region, though officials haven't specified exact service frequencies or which routes will see the most enhancement.

World Cup Preparations

The funding comes as Philadelphia prepares to host six FIFA World Cup matches at Lincoln Financial Field between June 14 and July 4, 2026. The stadium, temporarily renamed Philadelphia Stadium for the tournament, will accommodate 69,000 fans per match. The schedule includes five Group Stage games and one Round of 16 match on July 4, coinciding with America's 250th birthday celebration. Transit agencies typically receive federal World Cup funding to prevent gridlock and ensure international visitors can navigate host cities efficiently.

Transit Enhancements Planned

The $8 million will fund increased SEPTA service and a new Fairmount Park stop on the Philly Flash transit program, officials said. The City of Philadelphia strongly recommends using public transportation, particularly SEPTA's Orange Broad Street Line subway, to reach the stadium. Parking will be extremely limited, and the city will enforce resident-only parking in nearby neighborhoods to prevent traffic congestion. Officials haven't released detailed schedules showing how frequently trains will run during match days or how many additional buses will be deployed.

Fan Festival Adds Transit Demand

The transit improvements will also serve the FIFA Fan Festival at Lemon Hill in East Fairmount Park, which runs for 39 days from June 11 to July 19, 2026. Philadelphia is the only FIFA World Cup city in the U.S. hosting an official Fan Festival for the entire tournament duration. The free festival expects 15,000-25,000 attendees daily on match days, with giant screens broadcasting live matches, food trucks, live music, and cultural events. The new Fairmount Park transit stop will provide direct access to the festival site.

Tickets and Long-Term Benefits

FIFA announced that remaining tickets for Philadelphia's six matches will go on sale to the general public on April 1, 2026, at 11 a.m. on a first-come, first-served basis. The transit enhancements and festival infrastructure are expected to bring lasting improvements to Fairmount Park, including new sidewalks, ADA-accessible pathways, and critical infrastructure upgrades that'll serve the community beyond 2026.
