Philadelphia SEPTA Triples Frequent Bus Routes by 2027
SEPTA's first bus system overhaul in 63 years will triple frequent routes to 29
SEPTA Starts Bus Network Redesign in August
Philadelphia's SEPTA will launch its New Bus Network initiative in August, marking the first comprehensive redesign of the system in 63 years. The changes roll out under the Fiscal Year 2027 Annual Service Plan and will transform how riders navigate the region's bus routes. When fully implemented, the number of routes offering frequent service will jump from eight to 29, transit officials said.

Unprecedented Community Engagement Shaped Plan
The redesign emerged from SEPTA's largest community engagement effort ever, involving more than 20,000 residents through 150 in-person events, 40 virtual meetings, and 10 public hearings. The SEPTA Board approved the plan in May 2024 after reviewing this extensive public input. The initiative aims to make the bus system easier to use, more efficient, and more reliable for both existing and new customers across the Philadelphia metro area.
Frequent Service Routes to Triple Systemwide
The network's most dramatic improvement is the expansion of frequent service routes offering buses every 15 minutes or better, seven days a week. That number will increase from eight routes to 29 when implementation is complete. Two new routes will be added: Route 72 operating east-west on Cheltenham Avenue and Route 76 providing north-south service through Fishtown to Center City. Some low-ridership and redundant routes will be eliminated to improve overall efficiency, officials said.

Three-Phase Rollout Through Mid-2027
Implementation will occur in three phases, with Phase 1 starting in August 2026, Phase 2 in February 2027, and Phase 3 in June 2027. Additional public hearings are scheduled for April 15, 2026, before a final Board vote in May. The phased approach allows SEPTA to monitor performance and make adjustments as the new network takes shape across the region.
Riders Can Track Changes Through Moovit
