Philadelphia Rink Becomes Community Health Hub
Vacant North Philly skating rink converts to 22,000-sq-ft health center opening 2027
North Philly Skating Rink Becomes Health Center
Residents in North Philadelphia's Hunting Park and East Tioga neighborhoods will gain access to comprehensive healthcare when a vacant skating rink becomes the Carman Gardens Health Center in 2027. Greater Philadelphia Health Action is converting the old Carman Gardens Skate Rink into a 22,000-square-foot facility that'll serve all patients regardless of insurance status. The center will offer primary care, dental services, behavioral health, pharmacy, laboratory services, and specialty care including infectious disease, podiatry, rheumatology, and endocrinology.
Filling Critical Gap in Primary Care Access
The new health center addresses a significant healthcare access gap in North Philadelphia, where residents often rely on emergency rooms for routine medical needs. Though located just blocks from Temple Hospital, the facility will provide preventive care and regular checkups that keep people out of hospitals, community leaders said. Josh Klaris with North10 Philadelphia said residents shouldn't need to use emergency rooms for routine healthcare needs. The center aims to make primary care accessible within the neighborhood rather than requiring residents to travel or seek care at hospital emergency departments.

Comprehensive Services for All Insurance Types
The 22,000-square-foot community health hub will accept commercial insurance, Medicare, and Medicaid, and will also serve uninsured patients. Services will span multiple specialties beyond primary care, including dental, behavioral health, and pharmacy services on-site. The facility will also provide laboratory services and specialty care in infectious disease, podiatry, rheumatology, and endocrinology. Officials said the comprehensive approach ensures residents can receive most healthcare services in one accessible location rather than traveling to multiple providers across the city.
Construction Underway for 2027 Opening
A ceremonial wall breaking marked the official start of construction on the project, with the Carman Gardens Health Center scheduled to open in 2027. Greater Philadelphia Health Action is leading the conversion of the former skating rink into the community health hub. Officials haven't provided a more specific timeline for construction milestones or when the facility will begin accepting patients in 2027. The project represents a transformation of a long-vacant community space into active healthcare infrastructure.

Transformative Impact for Long-Time Residents
Local residents, including block captain Clayton Pickens who's lived in North Philly for 50 years, believe the health center will be transformative for the neighborhood. The facility will provide routine checkups and preventive care locally, reducing reliance on emergency rooms and making healthcare more accessible to residents who've faced barriers to primary care. Riders can use Moovit to plan trips to the new health center once it opens, with real-time transit updates for routes serving the Hunting Park and East Tioga areas.
