The service reductions affect the Cynwyd, Fox Chase, Manayunk/Norristown, and Warminster lines, which lost all weekend service. Other lines saw reduced frequencies during weekdays and weekends as SEPTA adjusts schedules to match available staffing levels. The changes come as Regional Rail ridership remains at approximately 60-65% of pre-pandemic levels, when the system carried 132,000 average weekday riders. Transit agencies nationwide have faced similar workforce shortages since 2020, forcing service adjustments across commuter rail systems in Boston, Chicago, and New York.
SEPTA didn't specify exactly how many trains were eliminated from schedules or provide detailed workforce shortage numbers. The agency said it's working to recruit and train new employees to restore service levels, though officials haven't provided a timeline for when full service might return. Base Regional Rail fares increased from $4.25 to $5.00 effective September 1, a 17.6% increase that took effect weeks before the schedule reductions. The fare hike and service cuts create a dual impact on riders during the system's post-pandemic recovery period.
Sauer told riders the agency understands the schedule changes will cause inconvenience and apologized for the impact. SEPTA is working diligently to recruit and train new employees to restore service levels as quickly as possible, he said. The changes coincide with broader financial pressures on SEPTA as federal COVID relief funding expires, though officials didn't directly link the service reductions to budget constraints beyond workforce availability.
