NJ TRANSIT Shares VA Telehealth App for Riders
Veterans who ride NJ TRANSIT can now access healthcare appointments during their commute using a Department of Veterans Affairs telehealth app. The transit agency shared information about VA Video Connect on October 22, helping veterans connect with VA providers via smartphone or tablet while traveling. The app lets veterans attend live medical appointments without missing work or disrupting travel plans, officials said.
Telehealth Access Expands for Commuting Veterans
VA Video Connect has been available since 2017 as part of the Department of Veterans Affairs' broader telehealth initiative. The app provides secure, private video connections between veterans and their VA care teams. New Jersey is home to approximately 340,000 veterans, according to VA data, though specific figures on how many use NJ TRANSIT services weren't available. Transit officials said sharing information about the app reflects the agency's commitment to supporting veterans in the region.

App Works on Multiple Devices During Transit
The VA Video Connect app works on smartphones, tablets and other smart devices, allowing veterans to maintain healthcare continuity while commuting. Officials said the app's secure connection ensures confidential medical conversations remain private even in public transit settings. Veterans can use the app whether they're traveling to work, between appointments or during other daily trips on NJ TRANSIT's bus, rail and light rail services. The agency didn't specify whether this announcement is part of a broader veteran outreach initiative or a one-time information share.
No New Transit Service Required
The announcement doesn't involve new NJ TRANSIT services or schedule changes. Instead, transit officials are promoting awareness of an existing VA resource that veterans can use while riding the system's trains and buses. NJ TRANSIT serves 21 counties across New Jersey and into New York, providing approximately 270 million annual passenger trips in pre-pandemic years. Officials haven't said whether they have a formal partnership with the VA or if additional veteran-focused resources will be promoted in the future.

Veterans Can Access Care While Commuting
Veterans who commute on NJ TRANSIT can now better manage healthcare appointments without disrupting work schedules or travel routines. The VA Video Connect app is available for download through standard app stores for veterans enrolled in VA healthcare. Officials said the resource helps veterans maintain regular contact with their care teams.
