MTA Prepares System for Extreme Cold Dec 8-9

New York City subway, bus, and commuter rail riders should expect normal service as the Metropolitan Transportation Authority deploys cold weather protocols for extreme temperatures hitting the region Monday and Tuesday. The MTA announced Sunday it's pre-treating switches and third rails, positioning equipment, and deploying additional personnel across all agencies to maintain reliable service during the cold snap. The preparations affect the system's 15.3 million riders across a 5,000-square-mile service area.

All-Agency Response to Weather Event

The cold weather preparations span NYC Transit subways and buses, Long Island Rail Road, Metro-North Railroad, and MTA Bridges and Tunnels, according to the transit agency. Officials said the goal is ensuring infrastructure and equipment can withstand harsh conditions while keeping customers moving safely. Transit agencies typically review weather forecasts and implement cold weather protocols including switch heating, third rail de-icing, and strategic equipment positioning to maintain service reliability during extreme temperatures. The MTA previously implemented similar measures during the January 2024 polar vortex, demonstrating established cold weather response procedures.

Infrastructure Protection Measures Deployed

Demetrius Crichlow, Senior Vice President of Subways at New York City Transit, said teams are working around the clock to pre-treat critical infrastructure including switches and third rails. "We're taking proactive steps to ensure our subway system remains safe and reliable during this extreme cold weather," Crichlow told the agency. Frank Annicaro, Senior Vice President of Buses, said operators and maintenance teams are prepared to handle challenges that come with extreme cold. "We're taking every precaution to keep our fleet running smoothly and our customers moving," Annicaro said. Officials didn't specify the exact number of additional personnel deployed or equipment units activated.

Commuter Rail Systems Ready for Cold Snap

Catherine Rinaldi, President of Metro-North Railroad, said crews have been working to ensure infrastructure and equipment can withstand harsh conditions. "Metro-North is fully prepared for the extreme cold weather," Rinaldi said Sunday. Rob Free, President of the Long Island Rail Road, said maintenance teams are positioned strategically across the system with additional equipment ready to deploy if needed. The cold weather protocols remain in effect through Tuesday, Dec. 9, though officials haven't said whether preparations will extend beyond that date if temperatures remain low.

Riders Advised to Monitor Service Updates

Commuters should plan extra travel time and stay informed about potential service changes during the extreme cold period, transit officials said. While the MTA's comprehensive preparations aim to maintain normal service levels, extreme weather can still cause unexpected delays or disruptions. Riders can check real-time service updates and plan trips using Moovit, which provides current information for all MTA subway, bus, and commuter rail lines throughout the cold weather event.
