MTA Adds Service for July 4 Holiday
New York City subway riders will see Saturday schedules on Friday, July 4, as the MTA adjusts service for Independence Day celebrations, officials announced June 30. The transit agency's preparing for increased ridership as thousands head to fireworks displays and parades across the region. Demetrius Crichlow, Senior Vice President of the Department of Subways at NYC Transit, said the system will add trains on lines serving popular fireworks viewing locations.

Holiday Service Adjustments Across System
The Fourth of July ranks among the busiest travel days of summer for the MTA, which operates subway, bus, and commuter rail services across New York and Connecticut. Meghan Keegan, Chief Customer Officer at the MTA, said the agency's adding extra service where customers need it most. The service adjustments affect all MTA operating agencies including New York City Transit, Long Island Rail Road, and Metro-North Railroad. Transit agencies typically review ridership patterns for major holidays and deploy additional resources to accommodate demand while maintaining reliable service.
Extra Buses and Trains Deployed
Frank Annicaro, Senior Vice President of the Department of Buses at NYC Transit, said the agency's deploying extra buses on routes serving major parks and waterfront areas where fireworks displays will take place. Long Island Rail Road will operate Saturday schedules with additional trains, according to Rob Free, LIRR President. Metro-North Railroad will run Saturday service with extra capacity on trains arriving in Manhattan in the afternoon and evening, Catherine Rinaldi, Metro-North President, told reporters. Specific numbers of additional trains and buses weren't disclosed in the announcement.

Extended Hours for Late-Night Travel
The MTA will extend service hours to accommodate customers traveling home after fireworks displays, officials said. Rob Free said LIRR's extending service hours to ensure everyone can get home safely after the fireworks. Catherine Rinaldi said Metro-North will provide extra capacity on trains departing after the fireworks conclude. Specific times for extended late-night service weren't provided in the June 30 announcement.
Riders Encouraged to Plan Ahead
Officials encouraged customers to plan ahead and allow extra travel time on July 4. Regular weekend service resumes July 5. The MTA expects increased ridership as residents and visitors travel to celebrations, though specific ridership projections weren't available. Riders can check Moovit for real-time schedule updates and service information across all MTA subway, bus, and commuter rail lines during the holiday period.
