MTA Brings R211 Trains to Bronx 5 Line

Bronx subway riders can now board the MTA's newest trains on the 5 line. The first R211 train began serving the Bronx on Monday, bringing state-of-the-art subway cars to the borough for the first time, officials said. The expansion marks the fourth route to receive the new-generation trains, following their debut on the A and C lines in March 2023.

Fleet Modernization Reaches Fourth Route

The R211 deployment to the Bronx represents a major step in the MTA's ongoing effort to replace aging subway cars across the system. The trains are part of a 535-car, $3.2 billion order from Kawasaki awarded in 2018, according to the MTA. After initial service on the A and C lines began in March 2023, the trains expanded to the N line in September 2024. The MTA hasn't announced a timeline for additional R211 deployments to other Bronx routes.

Wider Doors and Enhanced Technology

The R211 trains feature 58-inch-wide doors—8 inches wider than previous models—designed to speed up boarding and reduce delays during rush hour, officials said. Each car includes eight security cameras, digital displays with real-time service information, and improved accessibility features. "These state-of-the-art trains offer a smoother, more reliable ride with features that make commuting easier and more comfortable for everyone," Janno Lieber, MTA Chair and CEO, said in a statement Monday.

Immediate Service Begins

The new trains entered service on the 5 line Monday, with riders able to board them immediately. Demetrius Crichlow, Senior Vice President of Subways at New York City Transit, called the expansion "a major milestone in our efforts to modernize the subway fleet." The MTA didn't disclose how many R211 train sets will be assigned to the 5 line or what percentage of service they'll represent.

What Riders Need to Know

Bronx commuters on the 5 line will encounter the new trains during regular service, though officials haven't said how frequently they'll run compared to older models. The enhanced digital displays provide real-time updates about delays and service changes. Riders can track R211 trains and get live arrival times through Moovit's real-time transit information for all MTA subway lines.
