MTA Holds 22 Sessions on Fare Hike Proposals

New York City subway and bus riders face a proposed fare increase from $2.90 to $3.05 as the MTA schedules 22 public comment sessions across the region. The sessions run January 6-15, giving commuters a chance to weigh in before the MTA Board votes on the changes January 22, officials said. The proposed 5% increase would affect millions of daily riders who depend on the nation's largest transit system.

The fare proposals extend beyond base fares to include increases for unlimited MetroCards and commuter rail services, according to the MTA press release published December 18. A 7-day unlimited MetroCard would rise from $34 to $36, while monthly passes would jump from $132 to $140. Long Island Rail Road and Metro-North fares would see an average 5.5% increase. Lisa Daglian, Executive Director of the Permanent Citizens Advisory Committee to the MTA, said public input is a critical part of the decision-making process and encouraged riders to attend sessions.
The 22 sessions will be held both in-person and virtually across all five boroughs and suburban service areas, with Spanish interpretation available at all locations. Sessions begin at 6:00 PM, with the first scheduled for January 6 at MTA Headquarters at 2 Broadway in Manhattan and the final session January 15 at the same location. Officials said the sessions are designed to ensure diverse perspectives are considered before any final decisions are made. Registration information and complete session schedules are available through the MTA.

If approved by the MTA Board on January 22, the fare increases would take effect August 24, officials confirmed. This would mark the first fare increase since August 2023, when the base fare rose from $2.75 to $2.90. The MTA hasn't disclosed the total expected revenue from the proposed increases or detailed how the additional funds would be allocated across system improvements and operations.
Riders who regularly use subway, bus, or commuter rail services should consider attending a session to share how the proposed changes would affect their daily commutes and household budgets. The sessions represent a direct opportunity to influence transit policy before implementation.
