NYC Queens Plaza Elevators Upgraded for Better Access
Queens Plaza station completes three elevator upgrades ahead of schedule
Queens Plaza Gets 3 Modernized Elevators
Three newly modernized elevators opened at Queens Plaza subway station, making it easier for riders with disabilities, seniors, parents with strollers, and travelers with luggage to navigate the busy transit hub. The MTA completed the upgrades ahead of its December 31, 2024 target date, officials said Wednesday. The station serves the E, M, and R subway lines in Queens.
Accessibility Priority for Major Transit Hub
The elevator improvements are part of the MTA's ongoing commitment to making the subway system more accessible for all riders. "Accessibility is a top priority for the MTA, and these newly modernized elevators at Queens Plaza will make it easier for customers with disabilities, seniors, parents with strollers, and travelers with luggage to navigate this busy transit hub," Janno Lieber, MTA Chair and CEO, said in a statement. The agency's working to increase accessibility across the system, with over 100 stations now accessible. Federal law requires public transit agencies to provide accessible facilities under the Americans with Disabilities Act.

New Cabs, Motors, and Control Systems
The three elevators received comprehensive upgrades including new cabs, motors, and control systems, officials said. "These elevator upgrades are a testament to our team's dedication to maintaining and improving our infrastructure," Demetrius Crichlow, Senior Vice President of NYC Transit Department of Subways, said. The MTA didn't disclose the project's total cost. Queens Plaza serves as a major transit hub connecting multiple subway lines, though the agency hasn't released specific daily ridership numbers for the station.

Project Completed Ahead of Schedule
The MTA finished the elevator modernization ahead of its December 31, 2024 deadline, with the upgrades opening to the public in early January. Officials didn't say when the project began or provide a timeline for how long the work took to complete. The improvements ensure long-term reliability for customers at one of Queens' busiest subway stations, the agency said.
Smoother Experience for All Riders
Riders can now expect more reliable service when moving between street level and station platforms at Queens Plaza. The modernized elevators benefit passengers with mobility challenges, parents with strollers, and travelers with luggage navigating the multi-line transit hub.
