MTA Offers Free OMNY Cards at Service Centers

New York City subway and bus riders can pick up free OMNY cards at 26 customer service centers across the transit system, officials said Thursday. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority started distributing the contactless payment cards November 14 as MetroCard vending machines face removal by year's end. Janno Lieber, MTA Chair and CEO, said the giveaway makes it easier for customers to experience the new fare payment system's benefits.

MetroCard Era Ends After 30 Years

The transition marks the end of MetroCard, which served as New York's primary fare payment method since 1994. MetroCard vending machines will be removed from all subway stations by December 31, and from Long Island Rail Road and Metro-North stations by January 1, according to the transit agency. The OMNY system launched in May 2020 and has recorded over 2 billion taps since then. Riders can still refill MetroCards at retail locations through June 30, 2025, and use remaining value through September 30, 2025.

Free Cards Address Access Concerns

The free card distribution addresses equity concerns for riders without smartphones or contactless credit cards. Quemuel Arroyo, MTA Chief Accessibility Officer, said the OMNY card ensures all customers can continue using the system seamlessly. OMNY cards are also available for purchase at over 2,000 retail locations, though officials didn't specify the retail price. Shanifah Rieara, MTA Chief Customer Officer, said customer service centers are ready to help riders make the switch and answer questions about how OMNY works.

Transition Follows Industry Trend

The MTA's shift to contactless payment follows similar transitions by major transit systems worldwide. London's Transport for London moved to contactless payment in 2014, while Chicago's Ventra system replaced the Chicago Card in 2013. The MTA hasn't disclosed how many free cards are available for distribution or whether there are limits on how many each person can receive. Officials said customer service center staff will assist riders with setting up accounts and answering system questions.

Riders Should Act Before Deadline

Transit users who still rely on MetroCards should visit customer service centers soon to obtain free OMNY cards before vending machine removal begins. The agency hasn't specified whether card supplies are limited. Riders can check Moovit for real-time service information and station locations with customer service centers. Officials said the transition ensures no rider is left behind during the technological upgrade to the region's public transportation infrastructure.
