NYC-NJ PATH Expands TAPP Card Access Systemwide
PATH installs TAPP card vending machines at all 13 stations, with full services at five hubs
PATH Adds TAPP Card Machines at All Stations
PATH riders can now buy TAPP cards at vending machines in every station across the system, transit officials said Wednesday. The Port Authority announced the expansion on January 8, making blank cards available at blue TAPP card vending machines throughout the network that connects New York and New Jersey. Officials didn't specify how many total machines are being installed.

Five Stations Offer Full Services
The rollout follows a phased approach, with value-loading capabilities currently available at five major transit hubs: Journal Square, Hoboken, 33 Street, Newark, and World Trade Center. Riders at these stations can both purchase new TAPP cards and add value to existing cards. The remaining eight PATH stations currently offer card purchases only, though officials said full functionality will expand to other locations throughout January. The TAPP system launched in November 2024, replacing PATH's legacy fare payment infrastructure.
Expansion Continues This Month
Additional machines with complete TAPP card services will be installed at other stations during January, according to the Port Authority. Officials haven't provided specific dates for when each remaining station will receive value-loading capabilities. The vending machines accept contactless payment methods and cash for card purchases. TAPP cards cost $2.90 per trip, the same as PATH's standard single-ride fare.

Modernization Aligns With Industry Trends
The vending machine expansion represents the latest phase of PATH's transition to contactless fare payment technology. Transit agencies across major U.S. cities have implemented similar systems in recent years, including New York's MTA with OMNY, Chicago's CTA with Ventra, and Washington's WMATA with SmarTrip. PATH serves 13 stations across its network, which carried approximately 250,000 riders on average weekdays before the pandemic.
Cards Available Systemwide
Commuters who prefer physical cards over contactless credit cards or digital wallets now have easier access to TAPP cards throughout the system. The Port Authority hasn't released usage statistics showing how many riders have adopted TAPP cards since the November launch. Riders can check real-time service information and plan trips across PATH's network using transit apps like Moovit, which provides updates for all PATH routes connecting Manhattan with Jersey City, Hoboken, Harrison, and Newark.
