NYC-NJ PATH Clarifies Bike Rules for Safer Rides
PATH transit system reminds cyclists that full-size bikes are banned from first car on all NYC-NJ routes
PATH Bans Bikes in First Car on NYC-NJ Trains
Cyclists using PATH trains between New York and New Jersey can't bring full-size bikes into the first car, transit officials reminded riders Friday. The Port Authority Police Department enforces the restriction, which affects all four PATH routes connecting Manhattan with Newark, Harrison, Jersey City and Hoboken. The policy aims to keep the area near train operators clear and facilitate emergency evacuations.

Safety and Operations Drive Car Restriction
The first-car restriction is part of PATH's longstanding approach to accommodating cyclists while managing crowding and safety concerns, according to the transit agency. First-car restrictions are common among transit systems to maintain clear access to train operators and emergency exits. PATH serves about 75 million passengers annually across 13 stations on four routes. Officials didn't say when the policy was originally implemented or how many cyclists typically use the system.
Policy Mirrors Some Systems, Differs from Others
PATH's approach resembles San Francisco's BART system, which also prohibits bikes in the first car and restricts them during commute hours in certain directions. New York City's subway system takes a different approach, allowing bikes on trains at all times with no specific car restrictions but recommending riders avoid rush hours. Washington Metro restricts bikes during weekday rush hours but doesn't designate specific cars where they're prohibited. Officials didn't provide enforcement statistics or data on how frequently violations occur.
Enforcement Ongoing Across PATH Network
Port Authority Police monitor compliance with the bike policy throughout PATH's network, which connects four New Jersey cities with Manhattan. The policy has been in place for an extended period, though the exact implementation date isn't publicly available. Clarelle DeGraffe, General Manager of PATH, oversees operations for the transit system. Officials said the reminder was issued through PATH's social media channels on January 3.
Riders Should Board Second Car or Beyond
Cyclists bringing full-size bikes on PATH trains should board the second car or any car beyond the first to comply with regulations. The restriction applies at all times on all PATH routes. Officials didn't specify whether folding bikes or other compact bicycle types face the same restrictions. Riders can check real-time service information and policy updates through Moovit's transit app for PATH routes connecting New York and New Jersey.
