NYC MTA Wins Three National Safety Awards
MTA receives gold, silver, and bronze safety awards from APTA for transit excellence
MTA Wins Three APTA Safety Awards
New York's Metropolitan Transportation Authority received three prestigious safety awards from the American Public Transportation Association, officials announced Tuesday. The MTA earned gold, silver, and bronze honors recognizing excellence in safety practices across the nation's largest transit network, which serves 5.5 million riders on an average weekday. Janno Lieber, MTA Chair and CEO, said the awards validate the agency's commitment to maintaining the highest safety standards.

The American Public Transportation Association presented the awards at its Rail Conference in Denver in June 2025. APTA, the leading industry association representing public transportation agencies across North America, sets industry standards and best practices for transit safety and security. The MTA operates 472 stations and 665 miles of track, making it the largest public transportation network in North America. Patrick Warren, MTA Chief Safety and Security Officer, said the recognition reflects collective efforts of thousands of employees committed to creating a safe transit environment.
The MTA received the Gold Award for Safety and Security Excellence, the Silver Award for Innovation in Safety and Security, and the Bronze Award for Safety Culture. "These awards are a testament to the hard work and dedication of our employees who work tirelessly every day to keep our customers safe," Lieber told reporters. Warren said the agency's safety programs are built on continuous improvement, innovation, and collaboration. Officials didn't specify which particular programs or initiatives led to the awards, though the recognition acknowledges comprehensive safety efforts across the system's subways, buses, and commuter rails.

The awards were presented in June at APTA's annual Rail Conference, with the MTA announcing the recognition publicly on July 1. Demetrius Crichlow, Senior Vice President of Subways at New York City Transit, and Frank Annicaro, Senior Director of System Safety at Metro-North Railroad, were among officials accepting the honors. The MTA was among transit agencies recognized by APTA at the conference, though officials didn't say how many other agencies received similar awards.
The awards recognize safety improvements the MTA's implemented in recent years, including platform door pilots, enhanced lighting, and increased security presence across the system. Riders traveling through the network's 472 stations can expect continued focus on safety initiatives, officials said. Moovit provides real-time updates and service information for MTA subway, bus, and commuter rail routes throughout the New York metropolitan area.
