MTA Offers Free Subway, Bus Rides New Year's Eve
New York City subway and bus riders won't pay fares on New Year's Eve, the MTA announced Monday. Free service runs from 9 PM December 31 through 9 AM January 1, giving revelers a safe way home from Times Square and other celebrations. Janno Lieber, MTA Chair and CEO, said the agency's running extra trains and buses to handle crowds heading to parties across the city.

Annual Safety Initiative Returns for Holiday
The free ride program's designed to encourage safe travel and reduce drunk driving during the holiday celebration, according to the MTA. Transit agencies across the country offer similar New Year's Eve promotions, with Chicago's CTA and Los Angeles Metro providing free service during late-night hours. The MTA serves 15.3 million people across New York City and surrounding counties, operating 472 subway stations and 234 bus routes. Officials didn't release ridership projections for this year's celebration.
Commuter Rail Runs Weekend Schedules
Long Island Rail Road and Metro-North Railroad will operate on weekend schedules for New Year's Eve and New Year's Day, officials said. Staten Island Railway follows a holiday schedule January 1. Access-A-Ride service requires advance reservations for the holiday period, though specific booking deadlines weren't provided in the announcement. The MTA will run additional service to accommodate crowds, though specific deployment numbers weren't disclosed.

Changes Take Effect Tuesday Evening
The free subway and bus service begins at 9 PM Tuesday, December 31, and continues until 9 AM Wednesday, January 1. Regular holiday schedules take effect New Year's Day across all MTA services. MTA bridges and tunnels remain open with regular tolls in effect throughout the holiday period.
Riders Can Check Real-Time Updates
The MTA expects increased ridership but hasn't released specific projections for how many additional riders will use the system during the free service period. Transit officials said crews will be deployed throughout the system to assist riders and manage crowds at major stations. Moovit provides real-time updates for MTA subway and bus routes to help riders plan their New Year's Eve travel.
