MTA Honors Transit Workers on Appreciation Day
New York's Metropolitan Transportation Authority honored its 50,000 transit workers on National Transit Employee Appreciation Day March 18. MTA leadership visited facilities across the region to recognize employees who keep the nation's largest transit system running around the clock. The celebration included station announcements, proclamations, and customer comment boards where hundreds of riders shared supportive messages.

Leadership Joins Frontline Workers
MTA Chair and CEO Janno Lieber and Chief Customer Officer Shanifah Rieara visited the Customer Call Center and Penn Station before riding the Long Island Rail Road to Jamaica. New York City Transit President Demetrius Crichlow joined crews at Kingsbridge Depot and visited multiple customer service centers throughout the day. The hands-on approach demonstrated leadership's commitment to understanding the daily challenges transit workers face while serving millions of riders.
Presidents Work Alongside Employees
Long Island Rail Road President Rob Free visited the Hillside Facility and worked alongside machinists, while Metro-North Railroad President Justin Vonashek served as a coach cleaner at Grand Central Terminal. Both Crichlow and Vonashek recorded station announcements thanking employees and asking customers to show appreciation for transit workers. Manhattan Borough President Brad Hoylman-Sigal issued proclamations recognizing transit workers' essential service to the region.

Customers Share Supportive Messages
Metro-North set up comment boards at Grand Central Terminal where hundreds of customers wrote supportive messages for transit employees. The interactive displays gave riders an opportunity to express gratitude for the workers who operate trains, maintain equipment, and provide customer service daily. The positive feedback reinforced the vital role transit workers play in keeping New York moving.
Recognition for Essential Workers
The celebration highlighted the dedication of transit workers who operate the system 24 hours a day, seven days a week to move the city and region. Transit employees maintain service through all conditions, ensuring millions of riders reach their destinations safely.
