While the OMNY system has proven popular since its 2019 launch, some riders lack access to the smartphones or bank cards needed for contactless payment. The free physical cards provide an alternative for these customers, officials said. "OMNY has been a huge success, with more than 4 billion taps since we launched it five years ago," said Janno Lieber, MTA Chair and CEO. "Now we're taking the next step to make sure every New Yorker can access this fast, convenient way to pay." The MTA hasn't disclosed the total number of cards to be distributed through the program. Demetrius Crichlow, Senior Vice President of Subways at New York City Transit, said the initiative focuses on equity and access. Program budget details weren't immediately available.
