NYC MTA Expands Access With Free OMNY Cards
MTA distributes free OMNY cards to riders without smartphones or contactless credit cards
MTA Adds Free OMNY Cards for NYC Riders
New York City transit riders without smartphones can now get free OMNY cards to access the MTA's tap-to-pay system. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority launched the giveaway program Monday, with agency leaders distributing cards at subway stations and bus depots across the city. The initiative aims to ensure all riders can use contactless payment, regardless of whether they have smartphones or contactless credit cards.

Expanding Access to Contactless Payment
The card giveaway addresses a key equity concern as transit systems nationwide shift toward digital payment methods. While the OMNY system has proven popular since its 2019 launch, some riders lack access to the smartphones or bank cards needed for contactless payment. The free physical cards provide an alternative for these customers, officials said. Transit agencies typically face challenges balancing technological modernization with ensuring no riders are excluded from new payment systems.
Program Details and System Success
"OMNY has been a huge success, with more than 4 billion taps since we launched it five years ago," said Janno Lieber, MTA Chair and CEO. "Now we're taking the next step to make sure every New Yorker can access this fast, convenient way to pay." The MTA hasn't disclosed the total number of cards to be distributed through the program. Demetrius Crichlow, Senior Vice President of Subways at New York City Transit, said the initiative focuses on equity and access. Program budget details weren't immediately available.

Timeline and Distribution
The giveaway program began November 18, with MTA leadership including Lieber, Crichlow, and Frank Annicaro, Senior Vice President of Buses at New York City Transit, participating in first-day distributions. Officials haven't announced an end date for the card giveaway program. Details about ongoing distribution locations beyond the launch event weren't provided in the initial announcement.
Impact on Riders
The free cards let riders without digital payment options access the same tap-and-go convenience available to smartphone users. Cards work across all MTA subway and bus routes throughout New York City. Riders can check Moovit for real-time service information and trip planning across the MTA system.
