Metro-North Adds 25 New Locomotives to Fleet

Metro-North riders can expect quieter, smoother trips as 25 new Siemens Charger locomotives entered passenger service September 22. The diesel-electric trains replace aging equipment and deliver 20% better fuel efficiency, Governor Kathy Hochul announced. Officials said the 4,400-horsepower locomotives represent a major fleet modernization for the commuter railroad serving New York and Connecticut.

Fleet Modernization Years in Making

The MTA Board approved the Siemens Mobility contract in 2018, with first deliveries arriving in 2022. Metro-North serves hundreds of thousands of daily commuters across New York City, Westchester, Putnam, Dutchess, Orange, and Rockland counties in New York, plus Fairfield and New Haven counties in Connecticut. The new locomotives comply with EPA Tier 4 emissions standards, significantly reducing pollution compared to older equipment. Officials didn't disclose the total contract value for the 25-locomotive purchase.

Technical Specifications and Performance

Each Siemens Charger SC-44 locomotive generates 4,400 horsepower and reaches top speeds of 125 mph, according to the MTA. The trains meet the strictest EPA emissions requirements while burning up to 20% less fuel than the equipment they're replacing. "Our customers will notice the difference right away," Catherine Rinaldi, Metro-North Railroad President, said. "These new locomotives are quieter, smoother, and more reliable than the equipment they're replacing." The MTA hasn't announced how many older locomotives will be retired or specified their age and model numbers.

Deployment Timeline and Rollout

The locomotives began carrying passengers September 22, though officials haven't said when all 25 units will be fully deployed across Metro-North's network. Janno Lieber, MTA Chair and CEO, told reporters the trains provide "a more reliable, comfortable, and environmentally friendly ride for Metro-North customers." The three-year gap between first deliveries in 2022 and passenger service suggests extensive testing and crew training preceded the rollout.

Rider Impact and Service Information

Commuters should experience improved reliability and comfort as the new locomotives gradually replace older trains throughout Metro-North's system. "By investing in state-of-the-art equipment, we're not only improving the daily commute for hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers, but also reducing our environmental impact," Governor Hochul said. Riders can track which trains use the new locomotives and get real-time service updates through Moovit's trip planning features for Metro-North routes.
