NYC LIRR Upgrades St. Albans for Better Access
MTA completes ADA-accessible elevators and platform upgrades at St. Albans LIRR station
LIRR Adds Elevators, Upgrades at St. Albans
Long Island Rail Road riders in Southeast Queens now have access to new elevators and upgraded facilities at St. Albans station. The MTA completed the accessibility improvements in November, transit officials said. The station serves commuters traveling between Queens and Manhattan on the Far Rockaway and Long Beach branches, though officials didn't disclose the project's total cost.
Accessibility Drives Station Modernization
The upgrades focus on making the station fully accessible to riders with disabilities, according to the transit agency. Two new elevators now connect platforms to street level, meeting Americans with Disabilities Act requirements. The improvements are part of the MTA's broader capital program to modernize aging infrastructure across the LIRR network. Transit agencies nationwide face similar mandates to retrofit older stations with accessible features, though the timeline for the St. Albans construction wasn't specified.
New Amenities Enhance Rider Comfort
The station now features weather-protected canopies, energy-efficient LED lighting, new benches and trash receptacles, officials said. Workers refurbished existing staircases and installed improved wayfinding signage throughout the facility. "St. Albans is an important station for our customers in Southeast Queens, and these improvements will make their daily commute more comfortable and convenient," Rob Free, Long Island Rail Road president, told reporters. Janno Lieber, MTA chair and CEO, said the upgrades demonstrate the agency's dedication to improving customer experience while keeping fares affordable. Ridership figures for St. Albans station weren't immediately available.

Improvements Now Available to Riders
The MTA unveiled the completed upgrades Nov. 13, making all new features available to riders that day. The agency typically announces station improvement projects after completion rather than during construction. Officials didn't say when work began or how long the project took to complete. The improvements come as the MTA continues investing in station modernization across its commuter rail networks.
Queens Commuters See Enhanced Service
Daily riders can now access fully accessible platforms and benefit from improved lighting and shelter from weather. The station serves as a key connection point for Southeast Queens residents commuting to jobs throughout the region. Officials said the upgrades improve comfort and convenience without raising fares. Riders can check real-time service information and plan trips using transit apps like Moovit, which provides updates for all LIRR routes including service through St. Albans.
