NYC Completes Tap-to-Pay Modernization
NYC MetroCard sales end Dec 31 as MTA completes transition to OMNY tap-to-pay system
NYC MetroCard Ends Sales Dec 31
New York City riders won't be able to buy or reload MetroCards after December 31, transit officials confirmed. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority completed its transition to OMNY tap-to-pay technology, ending the MetroCard's 31-year run that began in 1994. MTA Chairman Janno Lieber said existing MetroCard balances can still be used temporarily, though acceptance could end within months.

Context & Background
The MetroCard replaced subway tokens in 1994 and became an iconic part of NYC transit culture over three decades. Approximately 400 commemorative designs were issued over the years, turning fare cards into collectible art. The fare has increased from $1.50 at launch to $2.90, with a $3 fare expected next year. A farewell event was held in Washington Square Park to mark the retirement of the payment method that served millions of daily riders.
Key Details
OMNY adoption has reached approximately 94% among riders, according to transit officials. The transition happened much faster than the decade-long shift from tokens to MetroCards in the 1990s. The New York Transit Museum is hosting a "Farewell, MetroCard" exhibit to commemorate the card's legacy. The tap-to-pay system eliminates the need for riders to wait in line at vending machines throughout the subway and bus network.

Timeline & Implementation
Starting December 31, 2025, MetroCard sales and reloads will stop at all vending machines. Riders with existing balances can continue using their cards temporarily, though officials haven't announced a specific end date for MetroCard acceptance. Lieber indicated the cards could be discontinued entirely within months as the system completes its modernization.
Rider Impact & Moovit
The transition streamlines boarding across buses and subway stations, though some riders express nostalgia and concerns about checking balances. Others have already embraced the new technology that accepts contactless credit cards, smartphones, and smartwatches. Moovit provides real-time updates and trip planning for NYC transit routes as the system transitions to OMNY.
