MTA completes redesign of 40+ Queens bus routes, first borough-wide overhaul in decades
MTA Completes Queens Bus Network Redesign
Queens riders now have access to a completely redesigned bus network after the MTA finished implementing changes to more than 40 routes Monday. The overhaul represents the first complete borough-wide restructuring of Queens bus service in decades, transit officials said. Janno Lieber, MTA Chair and CEO, said the redesign creates "a bus network that better serves how people live, work, and travel in Queens today."

Years of Planning Behind Network Changes
The MTA began planning the Queens Bus Network Redesign in 2019 through extensive community engagement to understand how travel patterns had shifted across the borough. Officials said the goal was adapting service to current needs rather than maintaining legacy routes that no longer matched where people actually travel. The agency implemented Phase 1 of the redesign in June 2024 before completing the full rollout this week. Demetrius Crichlow, Senior Vice President of Buses at New York City Transit, said the agency "listened to our customers and designed a network that provides faster, more frequent service where it's needed most."
Service Changes Affect Multiple Routes
The redesign affects more than 40 bus routes throughout Queens with new service patterns and improved frequency on high-demand corridors. Officials said the changes improve connections to subway lines, job centers, and key destinations throughout the borough. The MTA hasn't released a complete breakdown of specific modifications to each affected route. Transit agencies typically redesign bus networks to increase frequency on major corridors while adjusting or consolidating routes with lower ridership, though officials didn't provide specific ridership projections for the Queens changes.

Implementation Completed This Week
The MTA completed full implementation of the redesigned network Sept. 2, officials confirmed. The rollout follows the June 2024 Phase 1 implementation, completing a multi-year effort that began with community planning in 2019. Officials didn't disclose the total cost of implementing the redesign or provide a breakdown of funding sources for the project.
Riders Should Review New Routes
Queens bus riders should review the new routes and schedules as the changes directly affect daily commutes and travel routines throughout the borough. Officials said the redesign creates more direct routes to key destinations and improves overall service efficiency. Moovit provides real-time updates and route information for all MTA bus lines in Queens to help riders navigate the redesigned network.
