LIRR, Metro-North Add Upgraded Ticket Machines

Long Island Rail Road and Metro-North Railroad riders can now use upgraded ticket vending machines at stations across the system. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority completed the rollout in December, transit officials said. The MTA didn't specify how many machines were upgraded across LIRR and Metro-North stations.

Improved Customer Experience

The upgraded machines feature improved touchscreen displays, enhanced accessibility features, and faster processing speeds, according to the MTA. Janno Lieber, MTA Chair and CEO, said the upgrades are part of ongoing efforts to modernize the customer experience across the system. "We're making it easier and more convenient for our riders to purchase tickets, which is especially important as we continue to welcome back customers and attract new riders," Lieber told reporters December 5. The machines accept multiple payment methods and provide clearer instructions for purchasing tickets.

Faster, More Intuitive Interface

Rob Free, LIRR President, said the new machines represent a significant improvement in customer service. "They're faster, more intuitive, and more accessible, making the ticket-buying process smoother for everyone who rides the LIRR," Free said in a statement. Catherine Rinaldi, Metro-North President, said customers deserve the best possible experience when they travel. The cost of the upgrade project wasn't disclosed by the MTA.

Implementation Complete

The upgraded ticket vending machines became operational at LIRR and Metro-North stations by early December, officials confirmed. The MTA didn't provide a timeline for when the upgrade project began or how long implementation took. Transit agencies typically phase in equipment upgrades over several months to minimize disruption to riders.
