NYC Citi Bike Reaches Bay Ridge After 12 Years
Bay Ridge gets first Citi Bike station with more locations planned through October
Citi Bike Adds Bay Ridge Docking Stations
Bay Ridge residents gained access to Citi Bike service Thursday with the opening of the neighborhood's first docking station. Lyft, which operates the bike share system, placed the station at Colonial Road and Wakeman Place next to Owl's Head Park, according to NY1. Additional stations will be installed throughout the neighborhood through October, though officials haven't said how many locations are planned.

Expansion Continues 12-Year Growth Pattern
The Bay Ridge rollout extends Citi Bike's reach into a Brooklyn neighborhood that's lacked bike share access since the system launched in May 2013. Lyft acquired Citi Bike's operator in 2018 and has overseen expansions to outer borough neighborhoods in recent years. The system now operates more than 2,000 docking stations and 25,000 bikes across Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, Jersey City and Hoboken. Transit officials said the gradual station deployment allows the system to assess demand and adjust placement based on ridership patterns.
October Timeline for Additional Stations
The Colonial Road station opened September 12, with more locations planned through the end of October. Officials didn't specify exact addresses for upcoming stations or how many total docking points Bay Ridge will receive. The expansion follows a pattern used by bike share systems in Chicago and Washington, where operators gradually added stations to underserved neighborhoods rather than launching full coverage at once. Lyft hasn't released budget details for the Bay Ridge expansion.

Phased Rollout Through October
Installation will continue through October, according to the announcement reported by NY1. The phased approach gives residents time to discover stations as they appear throughout the neighborhood. Officials typically notify nearby residents before installing stations, though specific community outreach details for Bay Ridge weren't available.
New Transportation Option for Neighborhood
Bay Ridge residents can now use Citi Bike for local trips and connections to the broader bike share network across New York City. The expansion brings the system to a neighborhood that's been without bike share access for over a decade. Riders can find real-time station locations and bike availability through Moovit, which provides updates for Citi Bike across the five boroughs.
