Drivers on Richmond Road between the M7 Motorway and Townson Road will see major construction throughout 2026 as crews widen the congested corridor. The Australian and NSW Governments are funding the upgrade, which began major construction in January 2026, officials said. The arterial road currently handles over 89,000 vehicles daily connecting Blacktown and Windsor.
Context & Background
The upgrade is part of the North West Growth Centre Road Network Strategy to support the fast-growing North West Growth Area, according to Transport for NSW. The project aims to ease congestion, improve traffic flow, and enhance safety for all road users on the vital arterial corridor. Officials awarded the contract to Gamuda DTI joint venture in December 2025. The Review of Environmental Factors received 36 community submissions, with concerns addressed in a determination report published in June 2025.
Key Details
The upgrade includes widening Richmond Road to add an additional lane in each direction, building a new flyover bridge from the M7 Motorway off-ramp, and upgrading three major intersections. Following community consultation, Transport for NSW made design changes to improve pedestrian and cycling safety, including removing 100 metres of footpath on the eastern side near Woolworths Greenway Village and widening the western shared path to four metres. The project will maintain dedicated bus lanes at intersections to support public transport.
Timeline & Implementation
Night work and construction activities are ongoing throughout March 2026, officials said. A pedestrian path closure on Hollinsworth Road is scheduled from 2 March to 15 November 2026. The project is fully funded and moving forward with construction, though officials haven't announced a completion date for the entire upgrade.
