North West Manages Access During Pipeline Upgrade
Eight-week gas pipeline replacement on Birkenhead Road causes major delays on key route
Hoylake Gas Works Disrupt Wirral Transit Access
Commuters in Hoylake face weeks of significant delays as Cadent gas company's roadworks choke one of only two routes out of the Wirral town. The eight-week project on Birkenhead Road began August 26 and involves upgrading nearly a kilometer of aging gas pipeline, transit officials said. Temporary traffic lights near Meols station are causing major backups during peak travel times, with local officials warning the situation will be painful for residents.

Aging Infrastructure Drives Major Upgrade
The pipeline replacement addresses infrastructure originally installed in the 1930s that's reached the end of its operational life, according to Cadent. The project is part of a £800 million, 30-year network upgrade across the North West covering approximately 385 kilometers of pipeline, including over 40 kilometers on the Wirral. The timing coincides with children returning to school, compounding concerns from local businesses and residents about traffic impacts. Cadent sent thousands of letters to inform residents and is working with the local council to complete works as quickly as possible.
Work Progresses in Phases to Maintain Access
Crews are completing the pipeline replacement in 100-meter stretches to minimize disruption and maintain a two-way traffic system throughout the project, officials said. The phased approach allows Cadent to keep Birkenhead Road open while replacing the aging gas mains beneath the surface. Local councillors acknowledged the inconvenience in April and August, warning residents about upcoming road chaos. Cadent offers a compensation scheme for small businesses affected by lost income during the construction period.

Eight-Week Timeline Extends Through October
The roadworks that started August 26 will continue for eight weeks, putting the completion date in late October, according to the gas company. Officials haven't specified whether the timeline accounts for potential weather delays or unforeseen complications. The company is working closely with local authorities to ensure the project stays on schedule while maintaining safety standards throughout the construction zone.
Commuters Face Extended Delays on Limited Routes
The traffic disruption is particularly severe because Birkenhead Road serves as one of only two routes out of Hoylake, leaving commuters with limited alternatives during the eight-week project. The new pipes will help prevent gas leaks and reduce methane emissions while enabling the use of renewable gases like biomethane, officials said. Riders can check Moovit for real-time transit updates and alternative route planning to navigate around the affected area during the construction period.
