North West Celebrates Green Transit Milestone
Derry celebrates first World Public Transport Day with zero-emission bus fleet
Derry Marks First World Public Transport Day
Derry City celebrated the inaugural World Public Transport Day on Friday, April 21, 2026, at the North West Transport Hub, officials confirmed. Mayor Ruairí McHugh joined Linda Thompson from Translink to highlight sustainable travel's role in reducing congestion and carbon emissions. The city's recognized as one of Ireland's first to operate a fully zero-emission urban bus fleet, encouraging residents to leave cars at home for daily journeys.
Zero-Emission Fleet Leads Ireland
Derry's commitment to sustainable transportation positions it among Ireland's pioneering cities for green public transit infrastructure. The fully electric urban bus fleet represents a significant shift from traditional diesel-powered systems that dominated Irish cities for decades. Transit officials said the zero-emission approach aligns with national climate goals while improving air quality for residents. The initiative demonstrates how mid-sized cities can lead in transportation innovation, according to the transit agency.

Foyle Metro Reaches Major Milestones
Since launching in September 2023, Translink's Foyle Metro service has facilitated over three million passenger journeys, covering more than 1.3 million emissions-free miles. The service has removed over 2,000 tonnes of CO₂ from the atmosphere, officials said. The ridership figures demonstrate growing public acceptance of electric transit options in the region. Transit representatives said the service's performance exceeded initial projections for its first operational years.
Business Leaders Support Transit Investment
Derry Chamber of Commerce emphasized the connection between transport innovation and regional economic growth during Friday's celebration. The Chamber's Chief Executive, Anna Doherty, stressed that continued investment in public transport is essential for supporting economic development and improving accessibility. The organization highlighted the Better on Board Charter, launched in 2024, which brings together businesses and civic leaders to promote sustainable regional travel. Officials said the charter has attracted participation from dozens of local employers.

Riders Encouraged to Choose Public Transit
The World Public Transport Day celebration underscores Derry's commitment to green infrastructure and sustainable transportation solutions. Officials encouraged residents to make public transit their first choice for daily commutes and errands, noting that increased ridership strengthens the case for continued service expansion. Riders can access real-time schedules and trip planning through Moovit, which provides updates for Foyle Metro routes throughout the city.
