NJ Transit Adds Kids' Voices to Stations for Autism

NJ Transit riders will hear something different at train stations throughout April: neurodiverse children's voices making station announcements. The transit agency's celebrating Autism Acceptance Month with the recordings playing across its system, along with specially wrapped buses and a locomotive featuring autism acceptance messaging. Kris Kolluri, NJ Transit President & CEO, said the initiatives reflect the agency's commitment to making transit accessible and welcoming for all customers.

Partnership Brings Acceptance Messaging to Transit System

The Autism Transit Project sponsored both the bus and locomotive wraps and partnered with NJ Transit on the station announcements initiative. Transit agencies increasingly recognize the importance of creating inclusive environments for neurodiverse riders, who may experience sensory sensitivities or need additional support navigating public transportation. The children's voices at stations and visual messaging on vehicles aim to raise awareness while making the system more welcoming. NJ Transit's also unveiled a new website at njtransit.com/autism with resources and travel tips for the autism community.

Wrapped Vehicles Feature Children's Artwork

Two buses and one locomotive now carry special autism acceptance wraps throughout the NJ Transit system. The buses feature artwork and drawings submitted by neurodivergent children from around the region, with one bus design created entirely by local neurodiverse children. The wrapped locomotive incorporates the infinity symbol, representing autism acceptance and inclusion. Officials said the locomotive will remain in service for years to come, providing long-term visibility for the acceptance message across NJ Transit's rail network.

Digital Tools and Year-Round Engagement Continue

The MagnusCards travel app, which launched in 2022, continues to be available as a digital life skills tool for neurodiverse individuals using NJ Transit. The app provides step-by-step guidance for navigating transit systems. Officials said the public can submit Autism Acceptance events accessible by NJ Transit service throughout the year via email, extending engagement beyond April. The agency didn't specify how many stations will feature the children's announcements or provide details about the selection process for the recorded voices.

Riders Can Access Resources Through Multiple Channels

Neurodiverse riders and their families can find travel tips and resources on NJ Transit's new autism-focused website throughout the year. The combination of audible announcements, visual messaging on vehicles, and digital tools reflects a multi-sensory approach to accessibility. Officials said they're committed to ensuring the travel experience accommodates different needs and communication styles.
