NJ TRANSIT Gets First of 374 New Rail Cars
NJ TRANSIT received the first of 374 next-generation Multilevel III rail cars as part of a $3 billion fleet modernization effort, transit officials said. The new car will undergo several months of testing and commissioning before up to 40 additional cars enter passenger service later this year. The agency plans to fully modernize its rail and bus fleets by 2031.

Replacing Aging Fleet
The new Multilevel III cars will replace NJ TRANSIT's aging Arrow III and Comet II and IV single-level cars, some of which have been in service for decades. The modernization effort addresses long-standing reliability issues that have affected commuter rail service throughout New Jersey. At an event at NJ TRANSIT's Meadows Maintenance Complex in Kearny, the agency also displayed new 40-foot buses, Access Link paratransit vehicles, and a mobile police command center. Earlier this year, officials unveiled the first fully renovated River LINE light rail vehicle.
Dramatic Reliability Improvements
The new rail cars provide dramatically increased mechanical reliability, traveling approximately 400,000 miles before a mechanical failure compared to 30,000 to 40,000 miles for older cars, according to the transit agency. Customer amenities include additional seating capacity, enhanced accessibility, higher operating speeds up to 110 m.p.h., USB charging ports, and new onboard information screens. The new 40-foot buses feature USB charging ports, brighter LED interior lighting, low-floor design with ramps, improved intercom systems, and enhanced safety features.

Rollout Timeline
Up to 40 new Multilevel III cars are expected to enter passenger service later this year after completing testing and commissioning, transit officials said. The full fleet of 374 cars will be deployed as part of the agency's plan to complete rail and bus fleet modernization by 2031. Access Link plans to place new BraunAbility ProMaster Low Floor vehicles into service in the summer of 2026, designed to allow faster and easier boarding for seniors and customers with disabilities.
Impact on Riders
Commuters can expect more reliable service with fewer mechanical delays once the new cars enter regular operation, officials said. The enhanced amenities and accessibility features will improve the travel experience for all riders, particularly those with mobility challenges.
