New Carrollton Station Reopens P2 Garage
Commuters at New Carrollton Station gained access to an additional 3,593 parking spaces when Metro reopened the P2 Parking Garage on Monday, September 8, 2025. The reopening restores full parking capacity at the station, which serves as a major regional transit hub connecting Metro, Amtrak, MARC, Greyhound and the future Purple Line. Transit officials said ongoing construction may cause delays and congestion for drivers exiting the garages.
Station Transformation Underway
Metro's transforming New Carrollton into a mixed-use development with entertainment, residential, retail and commercial office space, according to the transit agency. The plan includes an urbanized town center and walkable community connected to one of the region's largest transit hubs. The redevelopment aims to create a first-class, multi-modal facility that serves multiple transportation providers. Officials said the project will modernize the decades-old station while maintaining its role as a critical transfer point for regional travelers.

Construction Impacts Access Points
Purple Line construction has closed several station facilities, with the Kiss & Ride Lot along Ellin Road shut down on Sunday, October 27, 2024 for approximately one year. Bus bays G, H, J and K also closed the same day for about a year, forcing riders to use temporary bus stop locations. A portion of the Park & Ride Lot along Ellin Road closed beginning the week of September 9, 2024 to accommodate bus operations. Customers can access the new P1 Garage via Garden City and Corporate Drive, with two exit points available in the garage.
Platform Upgrades in Progress
Amtrak's upgrading and modernizing the existing platform while building a new platform to track 1, transit officials said. The improvements will provide enhanced accommodations and amenities for intercity rail passengers using the station. Officials said parking, traffic and pedestrian access may be impacted throughout the construction period, though specific completion dates for the Amtrak work weren't provided.

Navigating Station Changes
Riders should expect delays, congestion and changes to travel patterns when exiting the parking garages due to ongoing construction, Metro said. The station continues to operate as a major transfer point despite the construction impacts affecting parking and bus facilities.
