New Carrollton Station Adapts to Major Redevelopment
New Carrollton Station undergoes mixed-use redevelopment with parking, bus bay closures
New Carrollton Station Faces Parking Limits
Riders using New Carrollton Metrorail Station face ongoing parking and access restrictions as Metro transforms the facility into a mixed-use development, transit officials said. Construction activities continue to affect parking availability, traffic flow and pedestrian access at one of the region's busiest transit hubs. The station serves Metro, Amtrak, MARC, Greyhound and will connect to the future Purple Line.
Major Redevelopment Underway
Metro's redevelopment plan converts the station into a multi-modal hub with entertainment, residential, retail and commercial office space, according to the transit agency. The project includes an urbanized town center and walkable community designed to integrate with existing transit services. The P2 Parking Garage reopened Monday, September 8, 2025, restoring access to both station garages. Combined, the facilities now provide 3,593 parking spaces, though construction continues to affect traffic patterns.

Multiple Closures Affect Station Access
The Kiss & Ride Lot along Ellin Road closed Sunday, October 27, 2024 for approximately one year, officials said. Bus bays G, H, J and K also closed that same day for about a year, with riders now boarding at temporary locations. A portion of the Park & Ride Lot along Ellin Road closed the week of September 9, 2024 to accommodate bus operations during Purple Line construction. Customers can access the P1 Garage via Garden City and Corporate Drive, but may experience delays and congestion due to ongoing work inside the facility.

Amtrak Platform Upgrades Continue
Amtrak's upgrading and modernizing the existing platform while building a new platform to track 1, transit officials said. The improvements aim to provide enhanced accommodations and amenities for intercity rail passengers. Officials haven't announced completion dates for the Amtrak platform work or the broader station redevelopment. The construction timeline for the full mixed-use development wasn't specified.
Riders Should Plan for Delays
Passengers using New Carrollton Station should expect continued parking limitations, traffic congestion and changes to pickup and bus boarding locations throughout the construction period. Officials said the restrictions stem from both Metro's redevelopment project and Purple Line construction activities. Riders can check Moovit for real-time updates on bus stop relocations and service changes at the station.
