New Carrollton Station Faces Parking, Access Limits

Riders using New Carrollton station should expect parking, traffic and pedestrian access impacts due to ongoing joint development and construction activities, Metro officials said. The station is undergoing a major transformation into a multi-modal transit hub with mixed-use development. Construction work affecting multiple areas of the station complex continues, with some restrictions expected to last through 2025 and beyond.

Major Redevelopment Underway

Metro is transforming New Carrollton Metrorail Station into a first-class, multi-modal and mixed-use development with entertainment, residential, retail and commercial office space, according to the transit agency. The plan includes an urbanized town center and walkable community connected by one of the region's largest transit hubs with access to Metro, Amtrak, MARC, Greyhound and the future MDOT MTA Purple Line. The redevelopment represents a significant shift toward transit-oriented development in the Washington region. Officials said the project aims to create a more integrated transportation and community hub.

Parking Capacity and Access Changes

The P2 Parking Garage at New Carrollton Station reopened Monday, September 8, 2025, giving customers access to both parking garages at the station. Both garages currently provide a total parking capacity of 3,593 spaces, Metro said. Customers can access and exit the new P1 Garage via Garden City and Corporate Drive, with two exit points in the garage. Due to ongoing construction within the parking garage, customers may experience delays, congestion and changes to travel patterns upon exiting, officials said.

Purple Line Work Affects Surface Lots

MTA Purple Line construction has resulted in parking impacts at the station complex. A portion of the Park & Ride Lot along Ellin Road closed to conduct bus operations beginning the week of September 9, 2024, according to transit officials. The Kiss & Ride Lot along Ellin Road closed Sunday, October 27, 2024, for approximately one year. Amtrak is upgrading and modernizing the existing platform and building a new platform to track 1 to provide enhanced accommodations and amenities, though officials haven't specified a completion timeline for the rail platform work.

Rider Guidance

Riders should review and follow all posted signage and construction notices for their safety, Metro said. Officials recommend allowing extra travel time due to potential delays and congestion in parking areas. Customers may need to adjust their usual parking and drop-off routines as construction continues at various locations around the station complex.
