New Carrollton Station Adapts During Major Upgrades
Multiple construction projects cause parking delays at New Carrollton station
New Carrollton Station Faces Parking Delays
Riders using New Carrollton station should expect parking delays and traffic congestion as multiple construction projects reshape the transit hub, Metro officials said. Joint development work and Purple Line construction are affecting parking access, pedestrian routes, and drop-off areas at one of the region's busiest multi-modal stations. Both parking garages remain open with 3,593 total spaces, though officials said customers may experience delays and changes to travel patterns when exiting due to ongoing construction.
Major Redevelopment Transforms Transit Hub
Metro is transforming New Carrollton Metrorail Station into a mixed-use development with entertainment, residential, retail, and commercial office space, according to the transit agency. The plan includes an urbanized town center and walkable community connected to Metro, Amtrak, MARC, Greyhound, and the future Purple Line. The redevelopment aims to create one of the region's largest transit hubs, officials said. The P2 Parking Garage reopened Monday, September 8, 2025, giving customers access to both parking facilities at the station.

Purple Line Work Closes Kiss & Ride, Bus Bays
MTA Purple Line construction closed the Kiss & Ride Lot along Ellin Road on Sunday, October 27, 2024, for approximately one year, officials said. Bus bays G, H, J, and K also closed the same day for about a year, with buses relocated to temporary stops. A portion of the Park & Ride Lot along Ellin Road closed beginning the week of September 9, 2024. The P1 Garage can be accessed via Garden City and Corporate Drive with two exit points, providing alternative parking while construction continues.
Amtrak Platform Upgrades Add to Construction
Amtrak is upgrading and modernizing the existing platform while building a new platform to track 1, officials said. The work aims to provide improved accommodations and amenities for intercity rail passengers using New Carrollton station. Officials haven't announced a completion timeline for the Amtrak platform projects. The combination of Metro's joint development, Purple Line construction, and Amtrak improvements means riders should plan extra time for parking and station access in coming months.

Plan Extra Time for Station Access
Riders should allow additional time for parking and navigating construction zones at New Carrollton station, transit officials said. The station serves Metro's Orange Line along with Amtrak, MARC commuter rail, and Greyhound bus service. Officials said the construction impacts will continue as the multi-year redevelopment progresses. Moovit provides real-time transit updates and alternative route options for riders navigating service changes at New Carrollton and throughout the Metro system.
