New Carrollton Station Adapts Access During Expansion
New Carrollton station parking access limited by multi-modal hub redevelopment
New Carrollton Station Faces Parking Access Limits
Riders using New Carrollton station should expect parking, traffic and pedestrian access impacts due to ongoing joint development and construction activities, Metro officials said. The station is undergoing a major transformation into a multi-modal transit hub with mixed-use development. Both parking garages remain open with 3,593 total spaces, though construction may cause delays and congestion when exiting.

Major Redevelopment Transforms Transit Hub
Metro is converting New Carrollton Metrorail Station into a first-class, multi-modal development with entertainment, residential, retail and commercial office space, according to the transit agency. The plan includes an urbanized town center and walkable community connected by one of the region's largest transit hubs. The station provides access to Metro, Amtrak, MARC, Greyhound and the future MDOT MTA Purple Line. The P2 Parking Garage reopened Monday, September 8, 2025, giving riders access to both parking facilities at the station.
Purple Line Work Closes Park-and-Ride Facilities
MTA Purple Line construction has resulted in significant parking impacts at the station. A portion of the Park & Ride Lot along Ellin Road closed to conduct bus operations beginning the week of September 9, 2024. The Kiss & Ride Lot along Ellin Road closed Sunday, October 27, 2024, for approximately one year. Customers can access and exit the P1 Garage via Garden City and Corporate Drive, with two exit points available. Amtrak is upgrading and modernizing the existing platform while building a new platform to track 1.

Ongoing Construction Affects Station Access
Due to ongoing construction within the parking garage, customers may experience delays, congestion and changes to travel patterns upon exiting, officials said. The joint development project continues to impact multiple areas of the station simultaneously. Officials haven't provided a specific timeline for when construction activities will be completed or when normal access patterns will resume.
Riders Should Plan for Delays and Detours
Transit users should allow extra time for parking and navigating construction zones at New Carrollton station. Officials advise riders to review and follow all posted signage and construction notices for safety. Moovit provides real-time updates and alternative route planning for Metro, MARC and other transit services affected by the ongoing construction activities.
