MTA Upgrades Elevators at Yankee Stadium Station
MTA completes modernization of three elevators at 161 St-Yankee Stadium station
MTA Opens 3 New Elevators at Yankee Stadium Stop
Riders heading to Yankee Stadium can now use three newly modernized elevators at the 161 St-Yankee Stadium BD subway station. The MTA opened the upgraded elevators just in time for the Yankees' Opening Day, transit officials said. The accessibility improvements provide safer and more reliable service for passengers traveling to games and events at the Bronx venue.

Part of System-Wide Accessibility Push
The modernization project is part of the MTA's broader effort to improve accessibility and safety across the transit system. In 2025, the agency doubled its previous record for elevator replacements and officials said they're on track for another record year in 2026. The proactive replacements help avoid unplanned outages that can strand riders who depend on elevators to access subway platforms. Transit officials said the upgrades reflect the agency's commitment to making stations more accessible for passengers with disabilities, parents with strollers, and travelers with luggage.
Complete Equipment Overhaul Completed
The work included full replacement of elevator cabs, equipment updates, and modifications to shafts and pits to accommodate new equipment, officials said. All elevator machine room, electrical, and mechanical equipment were replaced and modernized for better service reliability. Upgrades to remote monitoring equipment, fire alarm systems, intercoms, and cameras were also installed to enhance security and response times. The comprehensive overhaul ensures the elevators meet current safety standards and can be monitored remotely for faster maintenance response.

Two More Elevators Coming Soon
Two additional modernized elevators at the station are expected to reopen in the coming weeks, though officials didn't provide a specific date. The MTA currently has elevator replacement projects in progress across the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, and Manhattan. Transit officials said the system-wide effort prioritizes stations with aging equipment and high ridership to maximize the impact of accessibility improvements.
Riders Gain Improved Station Access
The elevator upgrades improve access for thousands of riders who use the station during baseball season and year-round. Passengers with mobility needs, families, and travelers can now rely on more dependable elevator service at one of the system's busiest sports venue stations.
