MTA Promotes Transit for NY Sirens Hockey Debut
New York's Metropolitan Transportation Authority is encouraging fans to take mass transit to the New York Sirens' first Professional Women's Hockey League game at Madison Square Garden on Saturday, April 4 at 8 p.m. The agency transformed Penn Station's ceiling lights to the team's teal, gold and white colors for 24 hours and distributed Sirens-themed stickers to fans. Fourteen subway lines and multiple bus routes serve the venue, with Long Island Rail Road operating 175 weekend trains to Penn Station.

Transit Access Supports Growing Women's Hockey
The promotional effort highlights how transit agencies increasingly support professional women's sports by making venues accessible to fans without cars. Madison Square Garden sits above Penn Station, one of the nation's busiest transit hubs, making it directly accessible via subway, commuter rail and bus. The MTA's coordination with the Sirens reflects broader efforts to promote sustainable transportation for major sporting events. Officials said the initiative demonstrates how transit infrastructure can support emerging professional leagues.
Comprehensive Service Network Serves Venue
Fans can reach Madison Square Garden via subway lines 1, 2, 3, A, C, E, B, D, F, M, N, Q, R and W, all stopping within walking distance of the arena. Bus routes M7, M20, M34-SBS and Q32 connect to Penn Station, while Metro-North Railroad passengers can transfer via a 10-minute subway ride from Grand Central Terminal. The Long Island Rail Road's 175 weekend trains provide direct access to Penn Station beneath the venue. Recent infrastructure improvements through the LIRR Concourse Project added 18-foot ceilings, doubled corridor width and enhanced accessibility throughout the station.

Record LIRR Performance Supports Event Access
The promotional push comes as the Long Island Rail Road achieved record on-time performance exceeding 96 percent in 2025, officials said. LIRR ridership increased 9% in 2025 to 81 million customers, the greatest increase among all MTA modes. The reliability improvements and ridership growth position the commuter railroad to handle increased demand for sporting events and entertainment at Madison Square Garden. Officials said the performance metrics demonstrate the system's capacity to serve major events reliably.
Transit Options Simplify Game Day Travel
Fans attending the historic first game can avoid parking challenges and traffic congestion by using the extensive transit network serving Penn Station and Madison Square Garden. The venue's location directly above one of the region's primary transit hubs provides convenient access from throughout the New York metropolitan area. Moovit provides real-time updates and trip planning for all subway, bus and commuter rail routes serving Madison Square Garden, helping fans navigate the transit system efficiently on game day.
