MTA Opens New Elevator at 14 St-Union Sq

Riders using the L train at 14 St-Union Sq now have improved access to the platform through a newly opened elevator that connects directly from the mezzanine. The MTA completed the accessibility upgrade one month ahead of schedule and on budget, transit officials said. The elevator serves one of the system's busiest transfer hubs, where multiple subway lines converge in Manhattan.

Part of Record-Breaking Modernization Push

The 14 St-Union Sq project is part of the MTA's broader elevator and escalator modernization program aimed at improving reliability across the subway system. In 2025, the agency completed a record 39 elevator replacements, more than double the previous record of 16 set in 2021. The MTA recently announced newly modernized elevator replacements across 11 subway stations earlier this month. Additional elevator replacement projects are currently in progress in the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens and Manhattan.

Full Equipment Replacement Improves Reliability

Mid-American installed the elevator, which included a full replacement of the elevator cab and associated equipment within the shaft and pit. Crews modified the shaft and pit to accommodate modern equipment designed to deliver a smoother ride and improved long-term reliability, officials said. The MTA will maintain the elevator, which is accessible via ramp from the mezzanine. The modernized elevators are designed to reduce unexpected outages and provide a more reliable commute for all riders.

Ahead-of-Schedule Completion

The project finished one month ahead of its scheduled completion date while staying within budget, according to the transit agency. Officials didn't specify the original timeline or total project cost. The elevator provides a direct route from the mezzanine to the L train platform, eliminating the need for riders with mobility challenges to navigate stairs at the busy transfer station.

Enhanced Access at Major Transfer Hub

The new elevator improves accessibility for riders with disabilities, parents with strollers, and travelers with luggage at one of Manhattan's busiest subway stations. The 14 St-Union Sq complex serves as a major transfer point connecting multiple lines in the heart of the city.
