MTA Skips DC Stops for IMF Meeting April 13-18

Maryland commuters heading to Washington, D.C., will find several bus stops closed this week as the city hosts a major international conference. The Maryland Transit Administration confirmed 11 commuter bus routes won't serve certain downtown stops from April 13 through April 18 due to road closures for the International Monetary Fund and World Bank Spring Meeting. The disruption affects thousands of daily commuters who rely on MTA service to reach jobs and appointments in the nation's capital.

Road Closures Force Service Changes

The IMF and World Bank Spring Meeting brings finance ministers, central bank governors, and economic officials from 190 countries to Washington each year, requiring extensive security measures and street closures in the downtown core. The 2026 gathering affects a concentrated area around 19th and 20th Streets in Northwest D.C., where many MTA commuter routes typically drop off morning passengers and pick up afternoon riders. Transit officials said the road restrictions make it impossible to serve regular stops during the six-day event. The MTA typically coordinates with D.C. authorities months in advance when major international conferences require service modifications.

Seven Morning Routes, Eight Afternoon Routes Affected

Morning routes 305, 325, 715, 810, 820, 830, and 840 won't stop at 19th St. & K St., N.W. or 19th St. between Pennsylvania Ave. & H St., N.W., according to the transit agency. Afternoon routes 335, 345, 630, 715, 810, 820, 830, and 840 will skip those same locations plus 20th St. & I St., N.W. The affected stops serve a business district with major employers including law firms, consulting companies, and federal agencies. Officials didn't provide estimates of how many daily riders use the closed stops, but the routes collectively carry several thousand commuters between Maryland suburbs and downtown Washington.

Alternative Stops Available Within Walking Distance

The MTA designated alternative boarding locations within two to four blocks of the closed stops. Morning commuters can use stops at 19th St. & M St., N.W., 19th St. & E St., N.W., K St. & 17th St., N.W., or 21st St. & M St., N.W. Afternoon riders have options at 19th St. & M St., N.W., 19th St. & E St., N.W., L St. & 21st St., N.W., 20th St. & E St., N.W., and K St. & 19th St., N.W. Transit officials said the alternative locations will operate on regular schedules throughout the disruption period. Service is scheduled to return to normal stops on April 19.

Riders Should Plan Extra Travel Time

Commuters should expect to walk additional blocks to reach their final destinations and allow extra time for their trips during the conference week, transit officials said. The service changes affect only specific downtown stops while routes continue to operate on regular schedules at all other locations along their paths. Riders can check Moovit for real-time bus locations and updated stop information during the service disruption. The MTA said it posts current service alerts and detailed alternative stop maps for affected routes.
