Miami-Dade Works to Restore Bus Network Reliability
Miami-Dade bus riders report ghost buses, overcrowding, and delays after network redesign
Miami-Dade Bus Riders Face Delays, Crowding
Miami-Dade Metrobus riders continue facing longer waits, packed buses, and missed trips more than a year after the county's Better Bus Network redesign promised faster, more reliable service. The Department of Transportation and Public Works acknowledged the problems and said it's working to fix them through better technology and more drivers. Ridership fell every month from October through December 2025, dropping between 2% and 10% each month.

Network Redesign Falls Short of Goals
The Better Bus Network launched in November 2023 as the biggest bus system overhaul in county history, cutting some routes while boosting frequency on others. Transit officials said the redesign aimed to improve speed and reliability across the system. However, riders report the changes haven't delivered promised improvements. Instead, they're experiencing service that's less predictable and more crowded than before the redesign, affecting their ability to reach work, school, and essential services on time.
Ghost Buses and Overcrowding Plague Routes
Riders frequently encounter "ghost buses" that appear in schedules but never arrive, forcing waits far longer than expected. Routes 203, 211, 77, and 100 face particularly severe problems with unpredictable service and overcrowding during peak hours. Overcrowding has become so extreme that wheelchair users haven't been able to board packed buses. Transit experts said missed trips create system-wide consequences, leading to more crowding, longer waits, and missed connections throughout the network.

County Working on Technology, Staffing Fixes
The Department of Transportation and Public Works said it's addressing challenges through improved technology, increased bus operator recruitment, and enhanced vehicle maintenance. Specific actions include maximizing bus fleet availability, deploying additional capacity on overcrowded routes, and improving real-time vehicle tracking. Officials didn't provide a timeline for when riders should expect to see improvements from these efforts.
Daily Challenges for Transit-Dependent Riders
For thousands of Miami-Dade residents who rely on public transportation to reach school, work, and essential services, the ongoing service problems represent significant daily challenges. The combination of unreliable schedules, overcrowded buses, and declining ridership suggests the network redesign hasn't yet achieved its goals.
