Miami-Dade Transit Expands Lost Item Recovery Access
Miami-Dade Transit operates lost and found service with 90-day recovery window
Miami-Dade Transit Offers Lost Item Recovery
Miami-Dade Transit riders who've left belongings on buses or trains can now retrieve them through the county's lost and found service. The Department of Transportation and Public Works operates a recovery system for items left on Metrorail, Metromover, or Metrobus vehicles, transit officials said. Passengers can report missing items by calling 786-469-5564 during business hours or filing reports online, though the agency isn't responsible for lost items or reimbursement.

Recovery System Helps Reunite Riders With Belongings
The lost and found service addresses a common challenge for transit systems nationwide, where thousands of items are left behind daily on vehicles. Transit agencies typically catalog recovered items and attempt to match them with owners who file reports. Miami-Dade's system requires detailed information from riders, including bus route numbers, direction of travel, time of day, and location where items were last seen. Officials said common items like keys and glasses are particularly difficult to catalog due to their high volume.
90-Day Window for Item Recovery
The department attempts to identify and return lost items to their rightful owners through its tracking system. Unclaimed items are disposed of after 90 days, according to agency policy. Government-issued documents that remain unclaimed are mailed to the issuing office rather than being discarded. When reporting lost items, customers should provide as much detail as possible to help staff locate belongings among recovered items. The agency operates the service Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., excluding county holidays.

Appointment Required for Item Pickup
Customers who've been notified that their item was recovered can schedule an appointment to retrieve it at the Overtown Transit Village North office, located at 701 NW 1st Court, Suite 121, Miami. Appointments are available one week in advance, transit officials said. A valid ID is required to retrieve lost items. The agency didn't specify how long customers have to pick up recovered items once notified.
Riders Advised to Check Belongings Before Exiting
Transit officials advise passengers to check their belongings before leaving vehicles to prevent items from being left behind. The department emphasized it's not responsible for lost items or reimbursement, making prevention the best strategy. Riders can access Miami-Dade Transit service information and plan trips using Moovit, which provides real-time updates for Metrorail, Metromover, and Metrobus routes throughout the county.
