Miami-Dade Adds Gate Arms for 2025 BRT Launch

Miami-Dade County's activated rail-like gate arms at intersections along the South Dade TransitWay as the 20-mile corridor prepares for Bus Rapid Transit service starting in 2025. The gate arms enhance safety for drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians while supporting express Metrobus routes that'll run from Homestead to Dadeland South. Phase one of the gate arm installation was completed in late fall 2024, with phases two and three beginning at the start of 2025.

Nation's Longest Electric BRT Corridor

The South Dade TransitWay will become the nation's longest battery electric bus rapid transit system on a dedicated corridor when service launches. Miami-Dade County officials said the 20-mile route represents a shift toward faster, more reliable transit connections for South Dade communities. The dedicated corridor allows BRT buses to bypass regular traffic, reducing travel times compared to conventional bus service. Transit agencies nationwide have increasingly adopted BRT systems as a cost-effective alternative to rail that can be implemented more quickly.

14 Stations with Enhanced Amenities

The BRT system will feature 14 stations equipped with real-time bus arrival displays, air-conditioned vestibules, free Wi-Fi, and pre-boarding fare collection. Fares will remain the same as current Metrobus rates and can be purchased at BRT stations using EASY Card or credit cards. The system will provide level boarding, all-door boarding, 24-hour security, and on-board bike storage for passengers. Service frequency will be 7.5 minutes during peak hours, 15 minutes off-peak, and 30 minutes on weekends.

Phased Gate Arm Activation Through Early 2025

The three-phase gate arm activation began with phase one's completion in late fall 2024. Phases two and three started at the beginning of 2025, with installations continuing at various roadway intersections along the TransitWay. County officials said drivers should slow down, obey all signs and signals, and only proceed when gate arms are fully raised and lights are off. The gate arms operate similarly to railroad crossings, lowering when BRT buses approach to ensure safe passage through intersections.

Service Launch Brings Faster South Dade Connections

Riders along the Homestead to Dadeland South corridor will see travel time reductions when BRT service begins in 2025, though county officials haven't specified exact time savings compared to current routes. The enhanced stations and frequent service aim to make transit more competitive with driving for South Dade commuters.
