Miami BRT Adds Gate Arms for 2025 Launch

Miami-Dade County's installing rail-like gate arms at roadway intersections along the South Dade TransitWay as the system prepares for Bus Rapid Transit service starting in 2025. The 20-mile corridor from Homestead to Dadeland South will become the nation's longest battery electric BRT system on a dedicated corridor. Drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians will encounter the new safety barriers at various crossings along the route.

Safety Infrastructure Supports Express Service

The gate arms enhance safety for all road users while enabling express Metrobus routes to travel efficiently through the corridor, transit officials said. The infrastructure supports traffic signal preemption that'll allow BRT buses to maintain faster, more reliable schedules than conventional bus service. Phase one of the gate arm rollout completed in late fall 2024, with phases two and three starting at the beginning of 2025. The system represents a significant investment in dedicated transit infrastructure that separates bus operations from general traffic.

System Features 14 Stations With Premium Amenities

The BRT system will feature 14 stations and 32 local bus stops along the corridor, according to the county. Stations will offer real-time bus arrival displays, air-conditioned waiting areas, free Wi-Fi, and level boarding platforms. The all-electric buses will provide level boarding, all-door boarding, 24-hour security, and on-board bike storage. Fares will remain the same as current Metrobus service and can be purchased at BRT stations before boarding using EASY Card or credit cards.

Phased Rollout Continues Through Early 2025

The gate arm installation's occurring in three phases, with the first phase completed in late fall 2024. Phases two and three started at the beginning of 2025, officials said. The BRT service is scheduled to start in 2025, though a specific launch date wasn't provided. The phased approach allows the county to test and refine the safety systems before full service begins.

Drivers Must Obey New Safety Barriers

Drivers are advised to slow down, obey all signs and signals, and never attempt to cross when gate arms are descending, officials said. The new BRT service will provide express north-south travel with improved frequency and reduced travel times through traffic signal preemption. Moovit provides real-time updates for Miami-Dade transit routes, helping riders track BRT arrivals and plan trips along the new corridor.
