Miami-Dade BRT Adds Gate Arms for 2025 Launch

Miami-Dade County's activating rail-like gate arms at roadway intersections along the South Dade TransitWay as the 20-mile corridor prepares for Bus Rapid Transit service in 2025. The gate arms enhance safety for drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians while supporting express Metrobus routes that'll travel from Homestead to Dadeland South. Phase one of the gate arm installation was completed in late fall 2024, with phases two and three starting at the beginning of 2025.

Nation's Longest Electric BRT Corridor

The South Dade TransitWay will become the nation's longest battery electric bus rapid transit system on a dedicated corridor when service begins. Transit officials said the 20-mile route represents a shift toward sustainable transportation infrastructure in South Florida. The dedicated corridor allows buses to bypass regular traffic, reducing travel times for riders commuting between southern Miami-Dade communities and the Metrorail connection at Dadeland South. County officials said the system's designed to improve mobility for residents in areas that've historically had limited transit options.

14 Stations with Enhanced Amenities

The BRT system will feature 14 stations equipped with real-time bus arrival displays, air-conditioned vestibules, free Wi-Fi, and pre-boarding fare collection. Fares will remain the same as current Metrobus rates and can be purchased at BRT stations using EASY Card or credit cards. The system will provide level boarding and all-door boarding to speed up passenger movement, along with 24-hour security and on-board bike storage. Transit officials said the pre-boarding fare collection will reduce dwell times at stations, helping buses maintain schedule reliability.

Service Frequency and Safety Protocols

The BRT will offer 7.5-minute frequency during peak hours, 15 minutes off-peak, and 30 minutes on weekends when service launches. Drivers should slow down, obey all signs and signals, and only proceed when gate arms are fully raised and lights are off, according to county officials. The phased activation of gate arms allows motorists to become familiar with the new traffic patterns before full BRT operations begin.

Preparing for Service Launch

Transit officials said the gate arm installation and station construction are progressing on schedule for the 2025 service launch, though a specific start date hasn't been announced. Riders can expect the new BRT service to provide faster, more reliable connections along the South Dade corridor compared to existing bus routes.
