Metro modernizes Glenmont station elevator through July 2026, two remain operational
Metro Upgrades Glenmont Garage Elevator
Riders parking at Metro's Glenmont station will find one of three elevators in the East Parking Garage out of service through mid-2026 as the transit agency modernizes the equipment. The rehabilitation project started September 15, 2025, and runs through July 14, 2026, transit officials said. Two elevators will remain operational throughout the construction period, ensuring continued access for riders who need them.

Part of System-Wide Maintenance Program
The Glenmont project is part of Metro's regular elevator maintenance program, which covers more than 350 elevators across the transit system. The agency conducts monthly and annual inspections of all elevators and performs major rehabilitation work every 10-15 years on each unit. This scheduled maintenance aims to prevent breakdowns and extend equipment lifespan, officials said. The work addresses aging infrastructure that serves thousands of daily riders who depend on elevator access.
Complete Component Replacement Planned
The modernization involves replacing and upgrading all major elevator components to improve reliability, according to Metro. New installations include a passenger cab, controls, motors, and safety devices. Officials said the comprehensive overhaul will bring the elevator up to current standards and reduce the likelihood of future service interruptions. The project focuses on one elevator at a time to maintain access for riders with mobility needs or heavy luggage.

Work Continues Through Summer 2026
The rehabilitation project will continue through July 14, 2026, with one elevator out of service while crews complete the installation and testing of new equipment. Metro didn't provide a specific timeline for when the second and third elevators might undergo similar modernization work. Officials said they'll maintain two operational elevators throughout the current project to minimize disruption for riders accessing the parking garage.
Riders Advised to Follow Safety Signs
Metro is advising customers to stay clear of construction zones and follow posted signs for safety while work continues in the East Parking Garage. The two operational elevators will remain available for public use throughout the construction period, officials said. Riders can check Moovit for real-time updates on station access and alternative parking options at nearby Metro stations if needed.
