Metro Upgrades Glenmont Garage Elevator Access
Metro begins 10-month elevator modernization at Glenmont station parking garage
Metro Starts Glenmont Garage Elevator Work
Metro riders who park at Glenmont station will find one of three elevators in the East Parking Garage temporarily out of service as the transit agency modernizes the equipment. The work began September 15 and will continue through July 14, 2026, transit officials said. Two elevators will remain operational throughout the project, ensuring continued access for riders who need them.

Routine Maintenance Program
The modernization is part of Metro's regular elevator maintenance program, which covers more than 350 elevators across the transit system. Metro maintains these elevators with monthly and annual maintenance schedules, and performs major rehabilitation work every 10-15 years to keep equipment reliable and safe. The Glenmont project follows this standard timeline, replacing aging components before they fail and cause unexpected outages that would disrupt service for riders who depend on elevator access.
Complete Component Replacement
The project replaces and upgrades all major elevator components to improve long-term reliability. New equipment includes a passenger cab, controls, motors, and safety devices, transit officials said. The comprehensive overhaul extends the elevator's operational life and reduces the likelihood of breakdowns that would leave riders without access. Metro's approach of rehabilitating one elevator at a time while keeping the other two operational minimizes disruption for parking garage users who need elevator service to reach their vehicles or the station platform.
Ten-Month Construction Timeline
The elevator work started September 15, 2025, and will run through July 14, 2026, giving contractors 10 months to complete the modernization. Officials advised customers to stay clear of the construction zone and follow all posted signs for their safety during the work period. Two elevators will remain open for public use throughout the construction, ensuring riders aren't left without vertical access in the multi-level parking structure.
Staying Informed During Work
Riders can monitor the project's progress and any service changes through Metro's communication channels, including MetroAlerts and the MetroPulse mobile app. Customer Care is available at 202-GO-METRO (202-466-3876) Monday through Friday from 7am to 8pm, and weekends from 8am to 8pm.
