Metro Adds Bike Lockers at 10 DC-Area Stations

Metro riders who bike to stations will see upgraded parking facilities at ten locations across the Washington region starting late March. WMATA's installing new bike lockers, smart racks, repair stations, and U racks at stations from Pentagon City to Rockville between March 23 and April 28, transit officials said. The upgrades aim to make Metro more accessible for cyclists who combine biking with rail transit for their daily commutes.

Phased Rollout Across Region

The bike parking improvements will roll out in phases over five weeks, according to the transit agency. Pentagon City gets new amenities March 23, followed by Braddock Road on March 25 and Foggy Bottom on March 27. Eastern Market's scheduled for March 30, Fort Totten on April 1, College Park on April 7, East Falls Church on April 9, Minnesota on April 14, Largo on April 20, and Rockville on April 28. Officials noted all installation dates are tentative and subject to change throughout the project period.

Temporary Parking Disruptions Expected

Existing bike lockers and racks may be temporarily unavailable at affected stations during installation work, WMATA said. Customers are advised to remove all personal property from existing lockers and racks by the posted dates at each station. Once installation's complete, the new facilities will be available for immediate use. The upgraded system features app-based operation, with instructions provided on locker decals to help users navigate the new technology.

Modern Features for Cyclists

The comprehensive upgrade package includes secure bike lockers for long-term storage, smart racks with advanced parking features, repair stations for basic maintenance, and U racks for short-term parking. Transit officials said the improvements address diverse needs of Metro cyclists, whether they need secure all-day storage or quick access during their commute. The project's designed to enhance cycling infrastructure without causing major disruptions to regular Metro operations.

What Riders Need to Know

Cyclists should check posted notices at their station for specific installation dates and temporary parking alternatives during construction. Officials said the upgrades will make it easier to combine biking with public transportation throughout the Washington region. Riders can track real-time service updates and plan trips that incorporate bike-to-rail connections through Moovit, which provides current information for Metro routes and station amenities across the DC-Maryland-Virginia area.
