Metro-North Adds Patriotic Locomotive to Fleet
Metro-North unveils Locomotive 250 with Declaration text and founding symbols
Metro-North Adds Locomotive 250 for US Anniversary
Metro-North Railroad riders will see a new patriotic locomotive rolling through the system as the agency unveiled its ninth Heritage Series train. The railroad introduced Locomotive No. 250, designed to commemorate America's 250th anniversary with historic symbols and bicentennial-inspired colors. The specially wrapped train operates across Metro-North's Hudson, Harlem, and New Haven Lines, officials said.

Heritage Series Honors Railroad History
The Heritage Series launched in May 2023 to celebrate Metro-North's 43 years of public service while honoring predecessor railroads and employees. The first locomotive paid homage to Metro-North's original 1983 design, establishing a tradition of commemorative trains. Previous locomotives have featured liveries honoring New York Central, Penn Central, New Haven Railroad, and Conrail. The series also recognizes Metro-North workers and military veterans who've served the region.
Design Features Historic American Symbols
Locomotive No. 250's wrap draws inspiration from colorful bicentennial locomotives and incorporates founding-era imagery. The design includes an American flag formed from Declaration of Independence text, creating a visual connection to the nation's founding document. Early American coinage symbols appear throughout, including Benjamin Franklin's Fugio cent emblem and a heraldic eagle design. The eighth Heritage Series locomotive honored veterans with American flag and military patch designs, while the seventh featured silver and blue colors from 1979 Conrail locomotives.

Commemorative Pin Available at Grand Central
A limited-edition commemorative pin featuring Locomotive No. 250 will be available for purchase at the Grand Central Gift Shop, officials said. The Heritage Series has become a collector's focus for rail enthusiasts, with each locomotive design representing different eras of regional rail history. Officials didn't specify how many pins would be produced or pricing details for the commemorative item.
Riders Can Spot Train Across Three Lines
The patriotic locomotive will operate in regular service across Metro-North's three main lines, though officials haven't released a specific schedule for where riders can spot it. Heritage Series trains run alongside standard Metro-North equipment in daily commuter service. Riders can track Metro-North trains and get real-time updates through Moovit, which provides schedule information and service alerts for the railroad's Hudson, Harlem, and New Haven Lines.
