Metro Expands Bike Access at 10 Stations
Metro installs bike lockers, smart racks at 10 stations from Pentagon City to Rockville
Metro Adds Bike Lockers at 10 DC Area Stations
Metro riders who bike to stations will soon have upgraded parking options at 10 locations across the Washington area. WMATA's installing new bike lockers, smart racks, repair stations, and U racks at stations from Pentagon City to Rockville, transit officials said. The work begins March 23 and runs through late April, affecting stations in Virginia, Maryland, and the District.

Background
The upgrades are part of Metro's ongoing effort to encourage multimodal commuting and improve first-mile, last-mile connections to transit, according to the agency. WMATA's replacing older bike parking infrastructure with modern amenities designed to accommodate growing cyclist demand across the system. Officials didn't specify how many new lockers or racks will be installed at each station. Transit agencies nationwide have expanded bike parking in recent years as more riders combine cycling with rail travel for their commutes.
Installation Details
The new amenities include secure bike lockers, smart racks with app-based access, on-site repair stations, and traditional U racks for quick parking. Pentagon City gets upgrades March 23, followed by Braddock Road on March 25, Foggy Bottom on March 27, and Eastern Market on March 30. Fort Totten's installation is scheduled for April 1, College Park for April 7, East Falls Church for April 9, Minnesota Avenue for April 14, Largo for April 20, and Rockville for April 28. Officials said all dates are tentative and subject to change based on construction progress.

Timeline
Existing bike lockers and racks may be temporarily unavailable during installation at each station, transit officials said. Riders are advised to remove all personal property from current lockers and racks by the posted dates at their stations. Once installation's complete at each location, the new facilities will be available immediately. Instructions for using the smart bike lockers will be provided through an app, with details displayed on locker decals.
Rider Impact
Cyclists who regularly use bike parking at the 10 affected stations should plan for temporary disruptions during their station's installation period. Officials said they'll provide updates throughout the installation period if schedules change. Riders can check Moovit for real-time Metro service information and trip planning options during the upgrade work.
