Metro Expands Bike Access at 10 Stations
Metro installs bike lockers, smart racks at 10 stations from Pentagon City to Rockville
Metro Adds Bike Lockers at 10 DC Area Stations
Metro riders who bike to stations will soon have upgraded parking options at 10 locations across the Washington region. WMATA's installing new bike lockers, smart racks, repair stations, and traditional U racks at stations from Pentagon City to Rockville, transit officials said. The work begins March 23 at Pentagon City and continues through late April at Rockville, with installations scheduled at two to three stations weekly.
Context
The systemwide bike parking upgrade represents Metro's effort to encourage multimodal commuting and improve first-mile, last-mile connections to rail service. Transit agencies nationwide have expanded bike facilities in recent years as cycling to transit has grown, particularly since the pandemic shifted commuting patterns. Officials said the new amenities will replace aging equipment at the 10 stations, though they didn't specify how many total parking spaces will be available or what the project costs. The upgrades include both traditional infrastructure like U racks and modern technology including app-controlled smart lockers.

Installation Schedule
Pentagon City gets new facilities March 23, followed by Braddock Road on March 25, Foggy Bottom on March 27, and Eastern Market on March 30. April installations include Fort Totten on April 1, College Park on April 7, East Falls Church on April 9, Minnesota Avenue on April 14, Largo Town Center on April 20, and Rockville on April 28. Officials said all dates are tentative and subject to change, with updates to be provided throughout the installation period. The work spans five weeks across stations on multiple rail lines.

Temporary Disruptions
Existing bike lockers and racks may be temporarily unavailable at each station during installation work, officials said. Customers should remove all personal property from current lockers and racks by the posted dates at each location to avoid losing items. Once installation's complete, the new facilities will be available for immediate use. Instructions for using the new smart bike lockers will be provided via an app, with details available on locker decals at each station.
Rider Impact
Cyclists who regularly use bike parking at the 10 affected stations should plan for temporary disruptions during their station's installation window and ensure they've removed personal items beforehand. The new smart lockers will require app-based access rather than traditional keys or combinations. Moovit provides real-time Metro updates and can help riders plan alternative routes if their usual station's bike parking is temporarily unavailable during the upgrade period.
