Metro Expands Bike Access at 10 Stations
Metro installs app-enabled bike lockers and smart racks at 10 stations through April 30
Metro Adds Bike Lockers at 10 DC Stations
Metro riders who bike to stations will get upgraded parking facilities at 10 locations across the Washington region starting March 23. The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority is installing new bike lockers, smart racks, repair stations, and U racks at stations from Pentagon City to Rockville through April 30. Officials said existing bike parking may be temporarily unavailable during installation, and riders should remove personal items from current lockers by posted deadlines at each station.

Expanding Multimodal Access
The upgrades are part of Metro's ongoing effort to improve first-mile and last-mile connections for riders who combine cycling with transit, transit officials said. Bike parking improvements help reduce car dependency and make Metro more accessible to riders across the region. The agency has been expanding bike facilities systemwide in recent years, though officials didn't provide data on current bike locker usage rates or how many new parking spaces the upgrades will add. Transit systems nationwide have increasingly prioritized bike infrastructure as ridership patterns shift toward multimodal trips.
Installation Schedule and Features
Pentagon City gets upgrades March 23, followed by Braddock Road on March 25, Foggy Bottom on March 27, and Eastern Market on March 30. April installations include Fort Totten on April 1, College Park on April 7, East Falls Church on April 9, Minnesota Avenue on April 14, Downtown Largo on April 20, and Rockville on April 28. The new bike lockers will be accessible through a mobile app, with instructions displayed on locker decals. Officials said all installation dates are tentative and subject to change throughout the six-week period.

Temporary Service Interruptions
Existing bike lockers and racks will be temporarily unavailable at each station during its scheduled installation, Metro officials said. Riders are advised to remove all personal property from current lockers and racks by the posted dates at their stations. Once installation is complete at each location, the new facilities will be available for immediate use. Officials said they'll update the advisory throughout the installation period as work progresses.
What Riders Need to Know
Cyclists should plan alternative bike parking arrangements during their station's installation period and check posted notices for specific dates. The new app-based locker system will require riders to download software to access secure bike storage, though officials haven't specified which app will be used. Riders can track installation progress and find real-time updates about bike parking availability through Moovit, which provides current service information for Metro routes and stations across the Washington region.
